DIY Green Building
Workshop Series

Help Us Build a Small StrawBale Shed/GreenHouse!!

The Gaia collective has partnered with WECSA to build a small storage
shed/greenhouse with a commitment to using natural (or reclaimed)
materials and self-reliant building techniques. We are inviting the
community to share in this project and come helpout. Our goal is to spread
the knowledge we attain through this project and give people a chance to
have first hand experience with sustainable, DIY building methods.

Our plans incorporate the following features:
-No poured concrete
-Rubble trench foundation
-Load-bearing strawbale walls
-Passive solar greenhouse design
-Thatched roof from local sources
-Stemwall made with reclaimed concrete materials

We're definitely open to your input and ideas!

***Warning: We are not green building experts. This project is a learning
excercise for us as well!

Workshop Schedule

June 12th-13th Starting at 10:00am (At the WECSA Farm)
Rubble Trench Foundation

We will build a 2 foot trench around the perimeter along with a drainage
trench. This trench will have a perforated pipe placed along the bottom
and the trench will be filled with rubble and gravel. This serves as a
simpler and greener foundation than poured concrete.

Digging the trench will be a very labour intensive process. Be sure to
prepare by bringing lots of water and adequate sun protection. If
possible, please bring your own shovel and pick-axe. Lunch will be
provided.
